Friends of Liberty State Park (FOLSP) will have their Advocacy Walk to the Liberty State Park Caven Point Natural Area to support the Caven Point Protection bills S2956 and A4468 on Saturday, Oct. 8, at 10 a.m. The walk is to protect the natural habitat from further golf course expansion.
The group will meet across the street from the parking lot at 300 Morris Pesin Dr., Jersey City. The JC Parks Coalition and Friends Of Liberty State Park will also host nature art drawing on the beach for kids from 11 to 11:30 a.m. You can pre-register by calling 201-792-1993.
5th annual Jerry Day is here
Jump 4 Jerry’s 5th annual Jerry Day will take place on Saturday, Oct. 8, from 3 to 7 p.m. at 201 Monticello Ave., Jersey City. The event will feature a block party in honor of Double Dutch Athletic Champion Jeremiah “Jerry” Grant.
The event will be held at the new Jeremiah Grant Community Center. Jewett Ave between Monticello and Bergen Avenues will be closed for the event. The new community center opened on Aug. 27. Offered there are competitive Double Dutch, summer camp, after school programs, tutoring, mentoring, book club, mommy and me classes, daddy and me classes, child care and more.
Jump 4 Jerry is a Jersey City-based Double Dutch jump rope team that honors Jerry Grant, who tragically passed away at the age of 8-years-old in 2018 when he was struck by a moving vehicle while crossing an intersection with his Double Dutch team.
North Bergen has car show Sunday
North Bergen will hold its 6th annual North Bergen Bike & car Show on Sunday, Oct. 9. The show runs from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. at 7900 Bergenline Ave.
Awards will be given to cars based on appearance, cleanliness, as well as special trophies given by Mayor Nicholas Sacco and County Commissioner Anthony Vainieri. Author to speak about new book at WNY Library
Vanity Fair’s senior media correspondent Joe Pompeo will be discussing his new book, “Blood and Ink: The Scandalous Jazz Age Double Murder that Hooked America on True Crime,” at a book signing on Saturday, Oct. 8, at 2 p.m. on the second floor of the West New York Public Library.
Copies will be available for purchase via cash or credit card. This book is about the famous double murder of Reverend Edward Hall and his church choir singer, Mrs. Eleanor Mills, and also involves the namesake of the West New York Public Library, Philip Alan Payne, who helped cover the story as managing editor of the New York Daily News, and later, the Daily Mirror. Payne also played a significant role in influencing top state officials to reopen this case before he died in a 1927 plane crash with two others, trying to be the first to fly from the United States to Rome. The left wheel of the plane, known as Old Glory, is on display in the library.
Light refreshments will be served, and Pompeo will also sign copies of the book that have been purchased elsewhere. The West New York Public Library is located at 425 60th St., West New York.
Community Spay Days coming this month
During the month of October, the ASPCA and Subaru are sponsoring three free spay/neuter days for Jersey City outdoor cats on Oct. 12, 14, and 16.
If someone is caring for an outdoor cat in Jersey City or know of someone who is, you can take action to stop the breeding cycle for this coming winter and prevent at least one litter of kittens from ending up in a shelter or rescue situation.

Women of Commerce, of the Hudson County Chamber of Commerce, will be hosting a Breast Cancer Walk on Saturday, Oct. 8, from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. in honor of Breast Cancer Awareness Month.

Bilingual Book Club continues at Hoboken Library
The Hoboken Library’s Bilingual Book Club continues in honor of Hispanic Heritage Month on Saturday, Oct. 8, from 3 to 4 p.m. in the Small Programming Room on the lower level of the Main Branch to discuss “The Four Agreements,” by Mexican author, Don Miguel Ruiz.
Translated into 46 languages, “The Four Agreements” is based on ancient Toltec wisdom. The self-help guide offers a code of conduct that can transform lives to a new experience of freedom, happiness, and love.
The Bilingual Book Club reads and discusses books centered on Latinx themes to celebrate Hispanic Heritage in the months of September and October. Anyone who is looking to read literature in English or in its Spanish translation is welcome.

History programs continue at Liberty State Park on Wednesday, Oct. 12, with Tales from the Morris Canal from 1:30 to 3 p.m. Visitors can learn the history of the Morris Canal, which was once a key factor for commerce in the 19th century and made history for its use of inclined planes and locks to transport coal and iron to cities in the Northeast and discover what remains of the canal in Liberty State Park today. The program will include a 60-minute Power Point presentation and discussion, followed by a walking tour to the Morris Canal Big Basin. The group will meet at the Information Desk inside the CRRNJ Terminal, 1 Audrey Zapp Dr., Jersey City. The program is recommended for ages 10 and up.
Join the LSP Trailblazers on Saturday, Oct. 15, for Trailblazers Volunteer Day from 10 a.m. to noon to help improve the park’s trails by removing invasive weeds and vines from the Richard J. Sullivan Natural Area and performing trail maintenance. Volunteers should dress to work outdoors with long sleeves, pants, sturdy shoes, and work gloves if you have them. The group will meet at the Nature Center located at 275 Freedom Way, Jersey City. The program is recommended for ages 10 and up.
Pre-registration is required for all programs as space is limited.
